Betty J. Talbert is managing editor of Philosophia Christi the journal of the Evangelical Philosophical Society. Writing clients have included the California Association of Realtors, Deep River Books, Wiley-Blackwell, Lexham Press and Fresh Voice Publishers among others. Betty is also a freelance book editor and writing coach.

Named as one of the outstanding OneOC volunteers for 2016, she loved giving back at her OneOC volunteer gig where  she edited marketing materials and has written  web and print marketing materials, press releases, media kits, social media strategy, radio ads (see examples on Editor/Writer page). She once served as a marketing manager at the nonproft Employers' Group, where she reached out to about 1,000 O.C. small businesses, human resource directors, executives, CEOs and community leaders.

When at Freedom Communications Betty served concurrently as the Long Beach Register’s editorial page editor and as a senior editor  on the Orange County Register's Opinion Pages. She has written  editorials, columns and blogs and was  a member of the Long Beach Register  Editorial Board.  She is probably best known, however, for her deep connection with the O.C. community in her role as the host of  the Register's letters-to-the-editor section.

For more than 15 years Betty managed work flow,  maintained quality, selected copy, designed pages, wrote headlines  and edited Register editorials, op-eds and letters from a prodigious range of topics that included election coverage, local, state and national political analysis, business, religion and entertainment. Combined, more than 500,000 submissions came accross her desk. Under her guidance, leadership and project managment close to 80,000 submissions were printed.

As an editor and blogger she blogged on elections, set, defined and administered policy as well as educated readers with  writing and research tips.  She  planned, moderated and analyzed reader forums and mentored staff.

Her love of writing began at Hallmark Cards Inc. As an account manager with a $1.8 million territory,  she developed sales presentations, training seminars and training manuals for her clients and staff. Her final leap into journalism was a surprise and delight.

Betty is equally at home behind a computer or in front of an audience.  She has presented before varied audiences of  professionals and lay people, chambers of commerce, students in college-level courses and church laity.  Speaking engagements have included  area chambers of commerce, Cal State Fullerton, Concordia University, Villa Park Rotary Club, Biola University, Evangelical Free Church of Fullerton and St. John’s Lutheran Church, Orange.

She graduated summa cum laude with a Masters Degree from Talbot School of Theology and has written journal articles for the Evangelical Theological Society as well as dictionary articles for Lexham Press.

To wind down, she loves  jazz improvization and playing  rock-and-roll flute.

About

We recommend ...

As an experienced manager, I have worked with few associates and colleagues who were more dedicated to their work and to

the Register’s readers than Betty.  Her stellar work ethic, talented writing and editing skills, her experience with page layout, her good character and sense of mission all combine to make her an outstanding, versatile, reliable and respected editor.”

Jocelyne Leger, MPA Media Art Director

“Most impressive to me was Betty’s willingness to assist colleagues and readers, always ready to go the extra mile to explain,

discuss and listen. As in-house resources go, she was tops. Her training and expertise in religious and educational matters

were invaluable for members of the editorial board, who often drew on her for guidance and information…

Mark Landsbaum, former Register editorial writer

21st century newspaper offices are places where the staff must be versatile and do it all.  Betty trained me at the Register.

She was a fantastic mentor, making sure that I understood the publication's tone and style.   She understands the way media works.

Betty is the kind of person who is warm and gracious to colleagues, and is a true pleasure to work with.

Rory Cohen,  Senior Editor/Communications Specialist   CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®

From my years proof-reading her pages at the Register, I can attest that she is meticulous

with grammar, punctuation and spelling …  I recommend Betty highly for any writing or editing task,

especially if it involves the Internet and interaction with readers and writers.
